Their story
Furman & Makenzi’s Sunflower Proposal
On September 6, 2026, Furman and Makenzi walked hand in hand across the lawn at Waialae Beach Park, near the Kahala, at a quarter past five in the afternoon. Makenzi, in a soft yellow dress, had no idea what was waiting on the sand just ahead.
Waiting by the water was a large heart of white and yellow roses filled with sunflowers, and beside it, tall white standing letters spelling MARRY ME, trimmed with more sunflowers. Furman got down on one knee, Makenzi said yes, and they spent the rest of the evening celebrating on the beach until the sun went down at 6:50.
The setup
A Heart of Roses & Sunflowers
Their proposal design was a large heart of white and yellow roses with sunflowers tucked all around it, set on the sand facing the ocean. On each side stood big white letters spelling MARRY ME, each one trimmed with sunflowers, and more sunflowers lined the way to the heart.
The question
Down on One Knee
Inside the heart, with the ocean right behind them, Furman got down on one knee and asked Makenzi to marry him. Our photographer captured every second, from the surprise on her face to the moment she said yes.
The ring
A Ring in a Sunflower
The ring box came out, and for a few of the photos the engagement ring rested right in the center of a sunflower. Then Furman slipped it onto Makenzi’s finger, and the close ups show it sparkling against the flowers and the sea.
She said yes
“He Asked, I Said Yes”
After the yes came the kisses, a dip, a lift off the sand and big hugs inside the heart, and they held up little wooden signs that read “He asked” and “I said yes.”
Portraits
Framed by the Flower Heart
The flower heart made a perfect frame for portraits: hand in hand looking out to sea, a kiss with the sunflowers all around, and a few relaxed moments sitting beside the heart on the sand.
Golden hour
Sunflowers in the Golden Light
As the sun dropped lower, we moved to the lawn and the edge of the beach for golden hour portraits, with Makenzi holding a sunflower, the sun bursting between them, and the two of them making a heart with their hands around the new ring.
On the sand
Sitting on the Sand
A quiet moment together, sitting on the warm sand with the green beach naupaka behind them and the evening sun on their faces.
Sunset walk
A Sunset Walk Along Waialae Beach
The evening ended with a walk along the shore at Waialae Beach, with the waves at their feet, Koko Head in the distance and the palms behind them, kissing and laughing as the light faded, just the two of them and a ring on her finger.
Where they stayed
