Magic Island, known in Hawaiian as ʻĀina Moana, “land of the sea,” is a little peninsula of palms and grass at the Diamond Head end of Ala Moana Beach Park. It sits right in the middle of Honolulu, only minutes from the hotels of Waikiki, yet once you walk out to the point the city seems to soften into sand and sea.
A rock breakwater wraps around the lagoon, so the water inside is calm, clear and turquoise. Sailboats glide in and out of the Ala Wai Harbor next door, Diamond Head rises above the Waikiki skyline, and in the evening the sun sets right over the ocean. It is one of the most beautiful places on Oahu to watch the sunset, and a favorite of ours for weddings, proposals and vow renewals.
Below are real Magic Island weddings planned by Aloha Island Weddings, with photos and videos, our planning tips, and directions.

Why Magic Island
Why Have Your Wedding at Magic Island?
Magic Island gives you a true Hawaii beach wedding without leaving town. There is no long drive, your guests can be there in minutes from Waikiki, and the views are some of the best on the island: Diamond Head, the Waikiki skyline, sailboats on the water and an open ocean horizon for the sunset.
The park is big, so there are many spots to choose from: the calm lagoon, the palm shaded oceanfront lawns with their giant banyan trees, and the lava rock point, each just a short walk apart. Come an hour before sunset and you will have warm, golden light for your ceremony and the whole sky glowing for your photos afterward.
Real wedding
Tony & Magdelena
Tony and Magdelena married at Magic Island an hour before sunset, with Diamond Head in the background. Their tropical flowers were classic white, purple and turquoise.

Proposals & vow renewals
Love Stories at Magic Island
Couples come back to Magic Island to celebrate 20 years together, and to watch the sunset the day after saying yes. Lurie proposed to Ana at Waialae Beach Park, then they spent the next evening here.
Sunset photo shoots
Golden Hour at Magic Island
After the ceremony we walk couples out to the lava rocks overlooking the ocean for sunset photos with the Waikiki skyline behind them. Bryan and Rie, married at the Hale Koa, even arrived for their sunset shoot in a 1952 Chevy. A sunset photo shoot can be added to any package for $350.
Planning tips
Tips for a Magic Island Wedding
Time it with the sunset
Start your ceremony about an hour before sunset for soft golden light, then save time for photos as the sky changes color.
Three settings in one walk
The calm lagoon, the palms on the lawn and the lava rock point each give you a different look, all within a few minutes’ walk.
Watch your step on the rocks
The lava rocks make dramatic sunset photos. Wear flat sandals for the walk out, and we will help you find a safe, steady spot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Magic Island?
Magic Island is the man-made peninsula at the Diamond Head end of Ala Moana Beach Park, 1201 Ala Moana Boulevard in Honolulu, right next to the Ala Wai Harbor. It is just a few minutes from the hotels of Waikiki.
What is the best time for a Magic Island wedding?
Late afternoon is our favorite. Plan your ceremony about an hour before sunset, like Tony and Magdelena did, and you will have soft golden light for the ceremony and time for sunset photos afterward. Mornings are calm and beautiful too.
Is the water calm at Magic Island?
Yes. A rock breakwater wraps around the lagoon, so the water inside is calm and turquoise, which makes it lovely for photos at the water's edge.
Can we take sunset photos at Magic Island?
Absolutely. After the ceremony we take couples out to the lava rocks overlooking the ocean, with the Waikiki skyline and Diamond Head behind them. A sunset photo shoot can be added to any package for $350 (see sunset photo shoots).
Can we have a proposal or vow renewal at Magic Island?
Yes. Magic Island is a wonderful spot for proposals and vow renewals, especially at sunset. Lurie and Ana came here to watch the sunset the day after their proposal, and couples have renewed their vows here after 20 years together.
Can we have Hawaiian music or a chant?
Yes. Our musicians can open your ceremony with a traditional Hawaiian wedding chant and play ukulele, harp or violin. See our Event Music page for the options.
