What a Hawaii Wedding Really Costs (Hint: Less Than You Think)

Ask anyone what a wedding in Hawaii costs and you will probably hear a big number. The figure most people quote is around $53,000. But that number hides an important detail: half of the couples who marry in Hawaii spend less than about $21,000.

Why the gap? An average gets pulled up by a handful of very large resort celebrations. The middle couple, the one you are most likely to be, spends far less, especially with a simple ceremony on one of Oahu’s public beaches.

A few numbers that surprised us

  • About 6 in 10 marriages performed in Hawaii are between two people who live out of state.
  • Oahu is the top island for visiting couples, with almost half of them.
  • Hawaii is ranked the number one honeymoon spot for 2026.
  • May and October are the busiest months to say “I do” here.

We put all of the numbers together in one place: what really drives the cost, why the venue matters most, honeymoon trends, which islands couples choose, and the marriage license facts, with a map to the new license office in downtown Honolulu. Every number comes with its source, most of them from the State of Hawaii.

Hawaii Weddings by the Numbers

  • About 29 couples a day. In 2025, 10,451 couples who both live outside Hawaii were married in the islands. That works out to roughly 29 visiting couples saying “I do” every single day of the year, and about 6 out of every 10 marriages in the state.
  • Oahu is the favorite island. Nearly half of those couples, 4,835 in all, chose Oahu. It has the most flights, hotels and beaches to choose from, so it is the easiest island for couples and their guests to reach.
  • May is the busiest month. May had the most weddings for visiting couples in 2025, with October close behind. January was the quietest month, with about half as many weddings as May, so it can be a great time to find your perfect date and spot.
  • Couples are a little older. Visiting grooms are typically 36 and brides 33, a few years older than local couples, who are typically 32 and 30.
  • A second chance at love. About 1 in 3 visiting couples have been married before. For many of them, a simple, romantic ceremony on the beach feels just right the second time around.
  • A big business. Couples spent an estimated $927 million on weddings in Hawaii in 2025, from flowers and photographers to ministers, music and cakes.
  • Golden anniversaries are rare. Only about 6% of married couples make it to their 50th anniversary. That is a big reason so many couples come back to Hawaii to renew their vows and celebrate the years together.

Why the Average Wedding Cost Is So Misleading

The average Hawaii wedding costs $53,369, but the middle couple spends just $21,117 (The Wedding Report). The difference comes from a small number of very large celebrations. Big resorts often require a food and beverage minimum of $15,000 to $20,000 before you add flowers, photos or music. From what we see with our own couples, those big budgets usually include resort hotel stays for everyone, too.

A ceremony on one of Oahu’s public beaches is a completely different story. There is no venue fee and no catering minimum, just a state beach permit, which we take care of. That is how most of our couples have a beautiful wedding on the sand for a fraction of the “average.” Our wedding packages range from $350 to $15,000.

Where Couples Say “I Do”

For couples who both live out of state, Oahu leads the way with about 46% of weddings, followed by Maui County at 26%, Kauai at 16% and Hawaii Island at 12% (Hawaii Dept. of Health). Oahu is the easiest island to reach, and it has a beach for every style, from Kahala and Waialae to the lagoons of Ko Olina.

The Honeymoon Factor

Hawaii is the number one honeymoon destination for 2026, ahead of Italy and Japan (Honeyfund). Couples now set aside about $6,500 for the honeymoon, around 26% of their wedding budget, and 1 in 4 couples use AI to help plan. Many of our couples combine both: they marry on the beach and stay on for the honeymoon.

Getting Your Marriage License

The Hawaii marriage license costs $65, there is no blood test and no waiting period, and you do not need to live in Hawaii. Your ceremony must take place within 30 days. On Oahu, the license office is now in downtown Honolulu at 201 Merchant Street, Suite 100 (Hawaii Dept. of Health).
